Hairdressing City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma (Intensive course)

A practical and theory based part time, one year course covering many basic Hairdressing techniques. This course allows you to gain and develop progress through classroom theory activities as well as through realistic salon environments. Practical tasks will be carried out using practice head blocks, models and fee paying clients. This course will allow you to progress and develop an awareness of hairdressing skills to a Level 2 standard within a one year time frame. You will be able to seek employment as a stylist within a salon or other related Hairdressing industry areas after successful completion of the course.

Entry requirements

You will be invited in for an interview, whereby you will carry out and achieve two successful assessments and results within Maths and English. You will be asked about previously attained qualifications and work experience achieved to date. Successful achievement of the above criteria is an essential requirement of course placement.

Course content

All related practical and theory elements of the VRQ Level 2 Diploma Hairdressing skills. Equal amounts of time, focus and attention will be paid to the theory and practical sections with a huge importance paid to individual, self study. An additional 10-12 hours per week will be required on top of the 6 weekly, timetabled college sessions for further study, practice and research. Practical sessions will cover a combination of technical and client based salon sessions. Online testing procedures will cover all essential knowledge and understanding. 

You will complete Hairdressing units covering:

  • Health and Safety
  • Shampooing
  • Consultation
  • Working in the Hair Industry
  • Cutting
  • Colouring
  • Perming
  • Styling
  • Displaying and Promoting retail
  • Services and products.

Assessment methods

Practical assessments are carried out in a realistic, working, environment and will be carried out on fee paying clients, models and in some cases practice head blocks. These assessments are carried out whilst being observed by a qualified assessor. Theory assessments are carried out at the end of each unit’s delivery and in line with the On-line assessment process. There are 11 tests in total to be carried out with each test requiring a minimum of 60% to pass. In order for a unit of the qualification to be complete this must include all the theory and practical for that unit.

Further study and career options

You will be able to seek employment as a stylist within a salon or other related Hairdressing industry areas after successful completion of the course. Further course options include; VRQ Level 2 Media Make-up NVQ Level 2 Beauty Therapy VRQ Level 2 Barbering VRQ Level 3 Hairdressing

Additional information

Trip and visits are an additional optional extra for individuals to work towards. There are additional costs involved in these trips and learners wishing to attend or take part must notify their tutor.

  • Salon International (October)
  • Clothes Show (December)
  • Brooks Annual Hair & Beauty Show (May)

Additional costs include:

  • Two block heads, approximately £90.00
  • Hairdressing kit, £140.00
  • Industry related uniform of tunic and trousers, £46.99
