Vehicle Accident & Repair (Paint Principles) IMI Level 3 Diploma
This Level 3 qualification covers technical needs for today’s motor vehicle repair industry, including diagnosis and rectification procedures for major paint damage. It provides essential knowledge for the body refinishing industry, working on a wide range of vehicles in all types of garages, dealerships and specialist body repair shops.
Students must have successfully completed a Level 2 Vehicle Body Repair course, or show suitable workplace experience.
This Level 3 qualification covers both theory and practical aspects, including:
- The preparation and application procedures
- The diagnosis and rectifying of paint faults
- Working with plastic materials and components
- Preparing metal and pre-painted surfaces
- Establishing paint defects
- Applying topcoats including pearls and metallic finishes (water based) and completing refinishing
- Colour matching
You will gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage. This qualification also forms the knowledge component (technical certificate) of the IMI SSC Accident Repair Advanced Apprenticeship framework (Paint).
The student’s knowledge is assessed by IMI Awards set practical assessments in a motor vehicle workshop environment, IMI Awards set on-line and multiple-choice testing and written assessments. The course is 50% workshop-based and 50% theory.
Further study and career options
This Level 3 qualification also prepares technicians for the Body Shop Technician Accreditation assessment at Technician level.
