Educational Practice Foundation Degree (FdA) Level 5 (part-time)

This course will equip you with the knowledge, skills and expertise required for working in the educational sector with children at a primary level, and associated professionals. This course is suitable if you are currently working as a primary teaching assistant or in other educational settings, and wish to work towards a professional qualification. The course will provide you with a formal qualification specifically designed for support staff working within primary educational settings or those interested in developing a route into primary teaching. Studying this course part-time will offer you the perfect balance between work and study, and will allow to arrange any other commitments you may have comfortably around your studies.

Entry requirements

You will need:

  • 1 A-Level or 2 AS-Levels OR
  • Access to Higher Education Certificate OR
  • Childcare CACHE Level 3 Diploma OR
  • Early Years Care & Education NVQ Level 3 OR
  • Equivalent Level 3 qualification OR
  • Relevant work experience with young people under 18 years old, or families, children and babies

You will also need to undertake a paid or voluntary placement in a relevant setting (minimum two days per week) for the duration of the course. You will need to arrange your own placement as this is an essential part of any offer made. Entry to this course will be based on your classroom experience and your commitment to teaching and learning.

Course content

The course aims to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding of teaching assistants, with reference to the continuous demands of classroom practice and changes in the curriculum. You will take on more responsibility for the support of teaching and learning, and will need to be equipped with curriculum knowledge, greater knowledge about pedagogy, the way children learn, and the different approaches to teaching and learning.

  • Supporting Literacy & Mathematical Development
  • Behaviour Management & Inclusion
  • Supporting Discovery Learning
  • Supporting Personal, Social & Emotional Development
  • Disability & Special Needs in Practice
  • English: Theory & Practice
  • Reflecting on Practice.

Assessment methods

You will be assessed via a range of methods during the course, such as presentations, reports, portfolio evidence, assignments and research.

Further study and career options

On successful completion of this course you will have enhanced your knowledge of education and to help develop your career or move into a teaching-related role. You can also progress on to a third year top-up degree, delivered at the University of Bedfordshire, to achieve a BA Applied Education Studies. With further study you can also enter teacher training and gain Qualified Teacher Status.
