Literacy & Language Teaching City & Guilds Level 3 Award
This course is designed for people that teach Functional Skills and GCSE English within Further Education. It is ideal for teachers who have L2/ GCSE English themselves, but want to improve skills to Level 3. It is a bridging qualification to the L5 Subject Specialism Certificate. This is a part-time attendance based course. The programme is recognised by the Department for Education and Skills and incorporates the 2014 Education and Training (ETF) teacher teaching standards. It is recommended for teachers of Functional Skills and GCSE English.
The course allows a teacher to develop their English Subject Specialism. Although applicants should be aware that all teachers of English are required to gain a full initial teaching qualification (CertEd/PGCE) in addition. The qualification has been developed in response to sector demand for a specific qualification for Functional Skills teachers to be developed. It is of particular value as a bridging programme for Skills for Life (SfL) teachers who are aiming to become Level 5 subject specialists.
The course is specifically designed for teachers of Functional Skills and the qualification is in place to allow SfL specialists to be able to bridge the gap between the Level 2 Functional Skills qualifications and the current Level 5 subject specialist awards. Any teacher of SfL who is looking to be awarded ATLS/QTLS must ultimately hold a Level 5 subject specialism.
This course is suitable for those teachers of English who want a subject specific qualification. Candidates are required to at least hold Level 2/ GCSE English and there must be confidence that an applicant’s Literacy Skills are at a standard in order to be able to progress to the study of these skills at Level 3. The qualification is appropriate for people above the age of 19. There is no requirement to be observed doing any practical teaching.
The course is a part-time attendance based programme. Sessions will take place once a week.
During the course the following topics will be covered:
- Analysing English language for literacy and language teaching
- Reading skills for literacy and language teaching
- Speaking and listening skills for literacy and language teaching
- Writing skills for literacy and language teaching.
The course is ideal for candidates who wish to progress to subject specific Literacy teacher education programmes. This qualification allows candidates to learn, develop and practise their personal skills in English required for entry to specialist teaching qualifications. The qualification was developed to cover the criteria for entry to mathematics (Literacy) teacher training in the lifelong learning sector.
4 x 2 hour unit tests at the end of each module.
Further study and career options
On successful completion of the Level 3 Award in English for Literacy Teaching learners could progress to the Level 5 Subsidiary Diploma in Teaching English (Literacy) in the Lifelong Learning Sector run through the University of Bedfordshire.
